This was the first development of the board of Wide Streets Commissioners, which was created by an Act of Parliament specifically to develop this thoroughfare. The street completes the north-south axis of Capel Street with the vista being terminated by City Hall. |

In 1191, under John Comyn, the first Anglo-Norman archbishop of Dublin, Saint Patrick's was raised to the status of a cathedral and the present building, the largest church in the country, was erected between 1200 and 1270.

Saint Patrick on his journey through Ireland is said to have passed through Dublin. In a well close to where the cathedral now stands, he is reputed to have baptized converts from paganism to Christianity. To commemorate his visit, a small wooden church was built on this site, one of the four Celtic parish churches in Dublin. |

The choir sings two services every day during school terms, the only cathedral in Ireland or Britain to do so. The earliest manuscript dates Christ Church cathedral to its present location around 1030. Dúnán, the first bishop of Dublin and Sitriuc, Norse king of Dublin, founded the original Viking church, which was probably subject to the archbishop of Canterbury.

The building occupied by Dublinia & The Viking World, served as the Synod Hall of the Church of Ireland from 1875 to 1983. A bridge links this building to Christ Church Cathedral. The Synod Hall and bridge were built in the 1870's as part of major restoration work being carried out on Christ Church Cathedral. |

By 1152 it was incorporated into the Irish church and within a decade the famous Archbishop Laurence O’Toole had been appointed. This future patron saint of Dublin began a reform of the cathedral’s constitution along European lines and introduced the canons regular of Saint Augustine forming a cathedral priory, which was to survive until the Reformation following the liturgical use of Sarum (Salisbury) in England. |
